In January 1992, the needs for a "Friends" group was discussed at a meeting of the Library Board. At that time, the Board joined the Friends of Libraries USA. A new members kit was received with suggestions of ways to start a local group.
In May of that same year, a small group of volunteers wrote some very simple by-laws, which were approved by the PVL Board. The first meeting was held in September, with twenty-one charter members present.
The first activity of this fledgling group was a read aloud of "The Pixie Wish Tree", a story written by a young friend. There was a Wish Tree placed in the Library, and children decorated it with their wishes. This fun activity, introduced at the Library, went on the road to several area locations.
Over the past eleven years, the Friends have made many contributions to the Library, including a new sign on the Library lawn, display racks, a baby changing station in the Community Room lavatory, and (in partnership with the Schwenksville Women's Civic Club) a new Computer Lab.
The Friends promote the Library by sponsoring reading programs for both children and adults. They are proud to continue funding the popular volunteer story time and began the library's first book discussion club. In 2003, the Friends secured a grant from the Pennsylvania Humanities Council to host a Read About It! book discussion series.
